I think you need an analysis of the radiation coming from the foil, a  
gamma spectrum, neutron spectrum, and other counts. I would be  
willing to email around to see if someone is interested in an  
analysis if you want.

If you want to stick with a do it yourself approach then counting  
with more layers of foil for particle discrimination might be good  -  
to see what the decline curve looks like by number of sheets.  Might  
be interesting to see what a contact film exposure would look like.   
Then there is always the old faithful CR-39.  Just throwing ideas  
into the air. I'm sure you have considered these things.
