Hi Kyle,
Glad to hear you're still plugging away. As I mentioned earlier,
this is a slow moving list, as befits a group of people who prefer
to _do_ rather than talk. When you're ready to take the next
step with the thruster, we'll all still be here.
As regards myself, I was so tickled after corresponding with
John Winterflood about those spark gap circuits that I
couldn't resist breaking in the new test bench with Ver 2.0
of those long ago experiments. 15 years ago, in fact. First
challenge was getting my old notes together; sad to say
I was at the time naive and thought I could remember everything,
so what notes I found were a little cryptic. But after a
day or two of work, I was able to reconstruct the circuit and
begin research in earnest on the effect. I must say that
it's been a wonderful little distraction and I have what I believe
at this point to be a novel effect.
While arc oscillations has been observed since the turn of the
18th century ( notably by Charles Steinmetz ) the explanation
of why arc oscillations occur is obscure and unnecessarily
opaque. What I have discovered is A) a simple and physical
explanation for the effects that lead to B) a set of design
equations for building up a working circuit.
If anyone is interested, google around a bit on the term
"arc oscillation" and you'll find the prior art. I was
aware of none of this back when I "discovered" this circuit,
which was a good thing, because all of what I have read
so far is pretty wrongheaded and would have impeded my
understanding of the true nature of the effect. Sorry Charlie.
If you find any interesting papers, post links. I'll
do some kind of write up over the weekend.
K.

Subject: [NewCandle] Status
Hi all,
Just a quick status report from my end. Not dead, and still planning to
work on the Schlicher thing. Work has been very rough lately, to the
point that my health has been affected adversely, so I've been too tired
to do much. Hopefully this will be better tomorrow. Planning to make a
trip to the local electronics surplus store. It will be money well
spent, I think. Maybe I will find a "puk" SCR there.
Also, I have come into a moderate supply of graphite pieces. A local
machine shop simply discards them, so one of my motley crew "liberated"
them. Anyone need some for something? They're about 1/2 inch thick,
maybe 2 inches wide, a few inches long. I've also got a few slabs, same
thickness, but maybe 6 x 10 inches. Let me know.
More to come as things develop, all the best,
--Kyle
