What many folks who have not visited China probably
can never fully grasp (unless you have spent time in
India) is the incredibly high and ubiquitous
particulate concentration in the air due mainly to a
large population cooking and heating with low-grade
biomass of any kind, including dried animal dung. 

It is just as bad in rural areas as in cities. The
particulate level is probably is responsible for the
colors.

The air in Beijing may have been the focus of massive
cleanup efforts for the Olympics (hopefully) but it
used to be stifling.
